Whole Child Yoga: 
Therapeutic Yoga for Children with Special Needs

This program is an IYT approved one week specialization program
that counts toward the PYT 500 hour certification.

This 50 hour training is designed for professionals who work with children:
  • Explore key critical concerns on the health problems and behaviors of children with a variety of special needs.
  • Discover and practice specific techniques to help promote optimal health, self-awareness and learning enhancement among children through a variety of effective easy to use age appropriate yoga practices and solutions.
  • Learn about a yoga therapy model designed to heal the whole child.
  • Study the many ways in which yoga and western approaches to conditions can compliment each other.
  • Practice the methodology in interactive and experiential program sessions.
  • Earn 50 contact hours of continuing education
Pre-requisites:
  • 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training Certification
  • School teachers, after school and extended day program providers, nurses, & other licensed health care professionals who work with children may also participate.
    • Must have a minimum one-year direct yoga experience in an ongoing class with a 200+ hour certified yoga teacher.

  • Lighthouse Voc-Ed Center, 46 Plaza Court, Groton, CT 06340
Dates:
  • 3 Weekend format:
    • April 27 - 29, 2012 * May 11 - 13, 2012 * June 1 - 3, 2012
    • Attendance at all sessions is required for certification.
Time: 
  • Friday 6:30 - 9:30
  • Saturday 6 a.m. - 9:30 p.m. with breaks for breakfast, lunch and dinner
  • Sunday 6 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. with break for breakfast
CEUs:
  • Total hours: 54 (must attend a minimum of 50 to earn certificate)
  • This program is approved by IYT as a Module 3 specialization training for the 500 hour certification
  • This program meets the Yoga Alliance requirements for up to 54 hours of continuing education.

Program Cost:  Payment in full is required at the time of registration.  Whole Child Yoga also offers an payment plan option which must be paid in full one month prior to the training.

Accommodations and Meals:
  • There is no residential component so you'll be on your own for housing.  There are a number of hotels and restaurants in the area.

Refund Policy:
  • 14 days or more prior to the first day of the training:
    • You will receive a refund minus a $50 processing fee.
  • 13 days through 1 days prior to the first day of the training:
    • You will receive 75% of your payment minus a $50 processing fee.
  • No refund is available:
    • if you cancel on the first day of the training.
    • if you are a ‘no show’ or if you leave the training early for any reason.
Your Trainers:
  • Karen Clarke, E-RYT 500, certified yoga teacher, owner of Yoga Heals Us LCC in Ledyard, CT and mother to 2 grown children.  Karen has been teaching yoga to children since 2000, specializing in yoga for children with down syndrome, on the autism spectrum, cerebral palsy and other challenging conditions.  Since 1996, Karen has completed more than 1000 hours of yoga teacher training with Kripalu Center and Integrative Yoga Therapy.  She has completed specialized training for children with special needs with Sonia Sumar, Yoga for the Special Child, Craig Hanauer, Every Kid's Yoga and Jennifer Cohen Harper, Little Flower Yoga.  Karen currently teaches yoga for children ages 10 - 21 at the Lighthouse Voc-Ed Center in Groton and for children ages 5 - 12 at the Mystic Aquarium with Synergy Socials.
  • Beth Gibbs, E-RYT 500, is a certified yoga therapist through Integrative Yoga Therapy.  She is a senior member of the teaching faculty and directs the school’s Professional Yoga Therapist Internship Program.  Beth has a masters degree in Yoga Therapy and Mind/Body Health from Lesley University in Cambridge, MA. She is the author of "Ogi Bogi, The Elephant Yogi," a therapeutic yoga book for children with a companion manual for adults who work with children.
